Common App Essay Word Limit: Exactly What Counts

The Common App personal statement prompt allows a maximum of 650 words. The text box will not accept anything beyond that. The minimum is technically 250 words, but most successful essays fall in the 500–650 word range.

This limit has been in place for years and is not expected to change for the 2026–27 cycle. It applies to the main personal statement only; individual colleges may have separate word limits for supplemental essays, often 150–250 words each.

The Common App counts words, not characters. A word is any string separated by spaces or punctuation. Contractions like "don't" and hyphenated words like "well-known" generally count as one word each.

The word counter in the Common App text editor is the official count. Do not rely on Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or another tool; they can differ by a few words depending on how they handle punctuation, em-dashes, and line breaks.

The word limit is a test of discipline. Admissions officers read thousands of essays each cycle. A student who respects the limit shows they can follow instructions and edit themselves. A student who tries to squeeze in 700 words signals that they think their words are more important than the reader's time.

• Cut setup. Start the story closer to the action.
• Remove phrases like "I think," "I believe," and "In my opinion."
• Combine sentences. Two short sentences can often become one stronger one.
• Ask a reader to mark every sentence that does not advance the story or reveal character.
• Read the essay out loud. Awkward padding is easier to hear than to see.
