College Application Checklist: Senior Year Timeline
The complete, month-by-month checklist for high school seniors applying to college. Use it as a roadmap for the Common App, transcripts, recommendation letters, financial aid, and every deadline in between.
Summer before senior year (June – August)
- Finalize your college list with a mix of safety, target, reach, and far-reach schools.
- Create your Common App account on August 1 when it opens and start filling in the basics.
- Draft your personal statement — aim for a solid second draft before school starts.
- Ask two teachers (usually junior-year core teachers) for recommendation letters.
- Register for any remaining SAT or ACT dates you plan to take.
- Visit or virtually tour colleges you haven't seen yet and take notes for supplemental essays.
August & September
- Meet with your school counselor to confirm your college list and request the counselor letter.
- Formally request transcripts through your counseling office (Naviance, SCOIR, or paper).
- Confirm recommendation letters are in progress — share your resume and a brag sheet.
- Draft supplemental essays for every school on your list; group similar prompts together.
- Attend college fairs and info sessions. Add representatives you meet to your Common App list.
October — Early Action & Early Decision deadlines
- Finalize and submit any October 15 applications (a handful of public flagships fall here).
- Complete the FAFSA as soon as it opens.
- Start the CSS Profile if any of your colleges require it.
- Send official SAT/ACT score reports to colleges that require them.
- Have a trusted reader review every essay before you submit.
November — the biggest month
- November 1: Early Decision I and most Early Action deadlines.
- November 15: University of Washington and several selective publics.
- November 30: UC and Cal State applications are due — no late submissions.
- Double-check that transcripts, test scores, and recommendation letters were received.
- Keep grades up — mid-year reports will be sent in January.
December
- Early Decision and Early Action results start arriving mid-to-late December.
- If admitted ED, withdraw all other applications immediately.
- If deferred, send a strong Letter of Continued Interest with fall-semester updates.
- Finish Regular Decision essays over winter break so January is stress-free.
January — Regular Decision deadlines
- Most Regular Decision deadlines fall on January 1, 5, or 15.
- Submit mid-year grade reports through your counselor.
- Confirm every application shows "complete" in each college's applicant portal.
- Apply for outside scholarships — many deadlines cluster in January and February.
February – April — waiting and financial aid
- Compare financial aid award letters side by side; ask about aid appeals when needed.
- Attend admitted-student days (in person or virtual) at your top choices.
- Regular Decision results arrive from mid-March through early April.
- Keep senior-year grades strong — offers can be rescinded for major slips.
May 1 — National Decision Day
- Submit your enrollment deposit to your chosen college by May 1.
- Notify the schools you're declining so waitlisted students can move up.
- Send your final transcript at the end of the year.
- Complete housing, orientation, and placement testing requirements from your new school.
